EFTPS Phishing Scam Targets Businesses and Individuals

On Friday, October 8th numerous businesses and individuals contacted us regarding an email they received supposedly from the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS).  The email is part of a new phishing scam that is targeting businesses and individuals who use EFTPS to make tax payments.  The email scam follows the standard phishing technique of claiming something has been rejected or needs to be updated.  The emails we have seen has the subject line:  Subject: SECOND NOTICE: Your EFTPS Tax Payment ID 010376219 has been rejected.  The body of the email says:

Your Federal Tax Payment ID: 010375157 has been rejected.
Return Reason Code R21 – The identification number used in the Company Identification Field is not valid.

Please, check the information and refer to Code R21 to get details about your company payment in transaction contacts section:

In compliance with IRS regulations, Payroll Experts does submit tax payments using EFTPS.  However, EFTPS will never contact you requesting additional information or notifying you of a rejected payment.  Payroll Experts receives immediate confirmation of all tax payments made on your behalf.  You may also go online to https://www.eftps.gov/eftps/ to view all of your tax payments.

Please contact us with any questions.
